SEIU 721 members, retirees and community activists from the Tri-Counties region went down to San Diego to protest the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) meeting on July 22. The group participated in the actions along with other labor allies in the Tri-Counties Central Labor Council. The bus load of activists left from Camarillo and also included UDW AFSCME members who came all the way down from Santa Maria on the Central Coast.
According to the site ALEC Exposed, ALEC is a group where “corporate lobbyists and state legislators vote as equals on ‘model bills’ to change our rights that often benefit the corporations’ bottom line at public expense.”
Activists have put pressure on corporations to split with this secretive group and so far over 100 major corporations have left ALEC.
The blog Capital and Main estimated that there were 2,500 protestors out with placards, flags and banners declaring a California to be an “ALEC-Free Zone.”
