721 Members Get First Look at Changes to LAC+USC

SEIU 721 members are getting the chance to have a say in the future of LAC+USC.

EVS workers, nurses, clerks and staffers in a variety of other classifications packed an auditorium on the hospital’s campus for a Town Hall that was arranged by LA Supervisor Hilda Solis’ office.

The proposed changes will take place in several phases, beginning with a Restorative Care Village that would provide continued care for vulnerable populations, such as homeless patients to recuperate after being treated in the Emergency Room, etc.

Theresa Velasco has worked as an Intermediate Clerk at LAC+USC for the past two years and served as the Master of Ceremonies for the Town Hall.

“I think it was great to have this on our campus because this is our home away from home and these are some well-deserved changes our community needs. We see more people on our streets every day and this is literally happening at our back door,” she said. “But when all these changes come, it needs to be union workers and union jobs.”

Other plans include: Demolition of Women’s and Children’s Hospital, building of a Childcare Center,  a General Hospital Reuse Feasibility Study and Campus Accessibility plans.

LAC+USC Chief Executive Officer Jorge Orozco laid out the plans and proposals for the audience and encouraged attendees to get involved by participating in future meetings and staying informed.

“SEIU 721 members are the heart and soul of our organization so of course it’s critical for us to hear their input and hear their voice to help shape the future of our campus,” he said.

Once again, the strength of our union power is on display! Our union gives us a voice and an opportunity to be heard.  See below for info. on upcoming meetings and make sure you’re included as the future of LAC+USC is decided. Together we win!
