All corporations–including private nonprofit organizations–should have policies in place to protect whistleblowers. Reforms mandated by the federal Sarbanes-Oxley Act create protection for employees who risk their careers by reporting suspected waste, fraud and illegal activities within the organization.

Corporations must develop, adopt and disclose a formal process and whistleblower policy to deal with complaints. Employees should check with management to determine whether whistleblower policies are in place.

In addition, employees can report suspected waste, fraud and illegal activities on the Accountable California Hotline by submitting this web form to make your report [link to form]–or the California State Attorney General Whistleblower Hotline as part of California Labor Code Section 98.6
