Budget Cuts Threaten DPSS

From the LOS ANGELES TIMES:

“To balance the books, Schwarzenegger is eyeing the dismantling of the state’s CalWorks program, which serves more than 500,000 poor families with children.”


From the GOVERNOR:
We have very few options left,” Schwarzenegger spokesman Aaron McLear said, adding that it is “very likely” that the new cuts will make the final list.


From CEO Bill Fujioka:

Elimination of CaIWORKs. The May Revision proposal would eliminate the CalWorks program for an estimated State General Fund savings of $1.3 billon in FY 2009-10 and $1.8 billon in FY 2010-11. The Department of Public Social Services estimates that up to 3,761 direct services positions would be eliminated.
