Residents and care providers delivered super-size vitamins to Speaker
Bass to urge her not to waver in her support for core services
including health care for children, support for students, care for the
elderly and programs that help Californians find employment as the
Legislature prepares to vote on the state budget.
Public
service providers from a variety of county, state and local departments
spoke about the damage the Governor’s proposal would have on children,
families, students and hit by the economic downturn.
“I’m
seeing families do everything they can to stay afloat, selling all
their furniture, any means to survive,” said Marcos Alvarez, who helps
administer CalWORKS, the state’s welfare to work program. “This is a
big crisis with no end in sight. It’s no time lose our humanity. After
all, that’s what this state is built on.”
