On July 1, 2010, the City of Los Angeles adopted a budget that imposed 26 furlough days on many SEIU Local 721 members. These service cuts are dividing our workforce and devastating our city services.
Our agreement with the City of Los Angeles prohibits the unilateral implementation of furloughs for any SEIU Local 721 member during the current fiscal year 2010-11.

SEIU 721 and other Coalition of LA City Union members across the city are filing a group grievance to help end these service cuts.

I am a recently retired City of LA employee. Though I am not old enough to collect benefits, I chose to leave. I know there are opportunites that will help me pay for my benefits. I left because I no longer felt the “proudness” of working for the City of LA. Unfortunate and WRONG decisions regarding the employees made by the Mayor have caused this mess! I pray that things improve but I doubt that they will. For all those who stayed good luck to you and my advice: Look for and find “something else” to add to your unfortunate situation, maybe start your own small business. Enhance a hobby that will make you $$$. There are many opportunities out there, think “outside” the box. Get away from the t.v. after work, it is slowing you down! You can do it! Good luck and God Bless you all.
…stop the furloughs or make everyone take them, including the mayor and city council!
East Valley Animal Shelter is the busiest in the nation……the Animals are getting poor care !!!! We have already lost employees that are NOT being replaced people are out for individual reasons ie sick, EXHAUSTION,jury duty, family leave, vacations etc…..FURLOUGHS ARE CAUSING US TO BE THAT MUCH MORE SHORT ON STAFF…..its AWFUL UNFAIR TO BOTH US WORKERS AND ANIMALS ! THE PEOPLE PAY TAXES TO KEEP THESE ANIMALS OFF THE STREETS WHERE IS THAT MONEY !!!!!!!!
I can’t believe that our city leaders would not even acknowledge the budget alternateves suggested by our union and allow 200+ dedicated workers to lose their livelihoods and more to be expected. Now we are seeing first hand that our agreements will not be honored. The time for action is now!
How is it that some city employees are asked to make furlough sacrifice and other city employees are exempt.
Fiscal responsibility lies with those that were responsible for monitoring and spending city funds. Audits should be performed to ascertain the culprits that mishandled the funds and punishment should be meted out according to the deed. We as employees should not be asked to balance the budget.
My classification was Communication Cable Worker and today I reported in LAX as a warehouse worker I lost my last title for know and also money that I put so much effort on become a cable worker. It seems like everybody just forgot about the people that got let go and transferred to other position. I am really disappointed. I thought at least you guys were going to find a job close to what we are doing right know. I myself feel like I have failed my family. I have to take a big pay cut and on top of that figure out how to pay my house and other bills, nobody seems to care. That is just my own opinion.
