On Nov. 8, City of Ventura employees focused a spotlight on the council chambers to highlight the City’s misplaced priorities.
City of Ventura employees representing SEIU 721, Association of Fire Fighters and Police Officers Association returned to the city council meeting on Nov. 8 to highlight the City’s misplaced priorities and offer better solutions. Workers brought flashlights and candles while focusing a giant spotlight on the windows of the council chambers.
“The last few budget years have been difficult for the City and that’s why workers have helped
out,” said Ramon De La Rosa, Utilities Service Leadworker speaking to the crowd. “But Ventura workers and residents are reaching our limits. We’re tired of the 911 fee gimmicks, closure of libraries and fire stations, and slashing family incomes when there are better solutions.”
SEIU 721 members Rosie Ornelas and Frank Maxim made presentations to the council including the option of enacting the foreclosure registry which is generating revenue for other California communities.
The contract for SEIU 721 members expired on June 30 and the bargaining committee has rejected the City’s last, best and final offer. Workers will be meeting with City Manager Rick Cole on November 16 to see if contract issues can be resolved.
