Food Bank Brings Workers and the Community Together

Recipients lined up for food distributions in the early hours of the morning starting at 3 a.m. The lines continued to spiral through the park as families and children waited at their chance to receive bagfuls of nutritious groceries and house supplies.
The “Families First Food Bank and Forum” was a joint partnership between SEIU 721 Caucuses, Heart of Compassion Distribution, the Salesian Boys and Girls Club and Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina.

More than 200 volunteers from SEIU Local 721 organized and coordinated fruits, vegetables, canned goods, juices, baby food and more starting at 6 a.m. to provide families with at least two weeks worth of groceries.
California State Sen. Kevin de León, of the 22nd Senate District, and Los Angeles County Assessor John Noguez also joined SEIU 721 service workers and families to share their ideas on how to bring good jobs back to Los Angeles.
In response to increasing gas prices, the rising cost of groceries and a 12.2% unemployment rate in Los Angeles County, the food bank was a necessary and effective way of providing families with immediate relief. The food bank is one of many volunteer events hosted by SEIU 721.
