Message from President David Green on behalf of SEIU 721 in Light of the Monterey Park Tragedy

Our hearts are breaking after receiving the tragic news of the senseless gun violence during Lunar New Year celebrations in the City of Monterey Park.

We are deeply saddened by the devastating violent act at a time when our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community should be welcoming renewal and celebrating with joy.

Words cannot express the deep sorrow we feel for our AAPI members across our union and our very own members who live and work in the City of Monterey Park, and across the Greater San Gabriel Valley region

While the details of the January 21st shooting are still sparse, we do know that many of the victims were taken to LA County’s LAC+USC Medical Center and are under the care of our very own emergency room professionals.

As we prepare for our union’s own AAPI Caucus Lunar New Year Celebration to usher in the year of the Rabbit and the Cat, we are reminded that we must remain vigilant to ensure peace and prosperity in all our communities.

We emphatically condemn all forms of hate and violence in our AAPI communities, and we will do our part to keep our communities safe.

Once again, we call on our government leaders at the highest level to take on the endless gun violence head on — we need real action, not empty words and prayers.
