Union Victory! SEIU 721 Defeats Attempt to Privatize & Contract Out Food Services at Camp Kilpatrick

When we fight, we win! Recently, SEIU 721 members at the LA County Probation Dept. successfully stopped an attempt to contract out our work.

It happened at Camp Vernon Kilpatrick, a Juvenile Camp in Malibu. Management signed a contract with Morrison Healthcare to privatize food services there – without notifying our Union. They subsequently relocated all our Food Service members to different Juvenile Camps!

But SEIU 721 members pushed back. Led by Alex Valdez, our bargaining unit 211 Chair, we met & conferred with management.

With the support David Green – our Union President and Executive Director – this matter was raised to the highest levels of Probation Department management.

It worked! Management relented and canceled the contract. All relocated Food Service workers represented by SEIU 721 returned to Camp Kilpatrick on Aug. 21, 2026.

When Union members are under attack, we stand together and fight back! By taking action, we enforced our rights. Management can’t get away with violating our contract if we remain vigilant and united.

“I’m here to serve The LORD and all SEIU 721 Brothers and Sisters,” said Alex Valdez. “Although we may not always win the fight, we are always in the fight. Union Strong ‘til the end!”

Our victory proves that our Union membership is our shield – and it demonstrates why must keep our Union strong. Not a Union member? Click here to join SEIU 721 now.

Together, we win!
