Mounting Coverage on LA County Child Welfare System

Coverage of Los Angeles County Dept. of Children and Family Services continues in the local press, but with some positive new developments.
  • LA County Supervisors Zev Yaroslavsky, Don Knabe and Mark Ridley-Thomas have shadowed social workers on the job as a part of SEIU 721’s Walk a Day in Our Shoes program. Deputies from the offices of Supervisors Michael Antonovich and Gloria Molina have also experienced social work firsthand. We have been consistently testifying and working with their offices to make improvements to our child welfare system.
Well, Supervisors Antonovich and Ridley-Thomas weighed in with a strong opinion piece, “Facts not Furor,” in the Los Angeles Times in an effort to clarify the facts surrounding child death reporting.
  • The Daily News ran an article that provides a different picture about child death reporting and a stark contrast to the LA Times reportage.
  • Finally the LA Times ran a letter to the editor from a social worker. “I see social workers give 150% commitment to the children and families we serve,” writes social worker Joan Becket.

By working together and supporting quality social work, we will succeed in making necessary changes to the LA County DCFS- changes that are key for both the families we serve and workers.
I encourage you ask social workers to sign up and receive updates on child welfare reform.

Sincerely,
