First SEIU Food Bank Puts Focus on Building Healthy Communities

Health care and park workers from South LA came together on March 27 for the first South LA Healthy Communities Forum and Food Bank. They were joined in a shady picnic area by Rep. Laura Richardson, who represents the area around the MLK-MACC clinic. Health care workers and their families told stories about why access to health care is so important.

More than 50 volunteers gave out hundreds of bags of food at Bethune Park. Health care workers at the Watts Health Center collected signatures of support for contract bargaining — and encouragement from Rep. Richardson, who had just returned from Washington, D.C., after voting for health insurance reform. Because of that, “30 million more people are going to be getting health care,” she said. “All we’re asking for is reasonable benefits. We’re not asking for a whole lot.”

Food banks are sponsored by the SEIU 721 South Region Parks and Recreation Leadership Council. Food is available for SEIU 721 members and the community. Please watch the SEIU 721 calendar for upcoming events.

  1. It was a good experience being in the forum foodbank. I was recommended by South West College by Mr. Apenahle Physic63.
