Social Workers: Making Strides to Simplify Work

Congratulations — 100 percent Foster Family Agency home review completed.
Social workers completed 2,589 home reviews and visited 6,596 children in less than 30 days in response to the LA County Board of Supervisors’ concern that Community Care Licensing had not thoroughly reviewed FFA homes.

Each home visit required a 3-page checklist and each child visit required a new worksheet. Adoptions workers alone conducted about 1,000 of the reviews. Job well done.

Investigative narrative revised.
The prior history table has been removed and instead staff will be permitted to write a brief summary. The department will look at technological advancements to further streamline the form.

Moratorium on new policies.
DCFS Director Trish Ploehn told SEIU 721 staff May 7 that there will be a six-week moratorium on new policies except in extreme cases that would go to the Executive Team.

Taking pains to streamline work. Social workers and staff are reviewing all requests from the Board of Supervisors with an eye toward workload and in some recent cases have avoided implementation of new policies.

“The Board and DCFS asked us to review thousands of homes so we sat down and came up with a plan together. Social workers used the opportunity to spend more quality time with children and get to know their family situation even better than before.”
