‘We Are Ventura’: 250 City Workers Unite for Quality Jobs and Services

United for VenturaHolding signs that said “United for Ventura,” 250 police officers, firefighters, and a sea of SEIU 721 members and their families in purple surged through downtown Ventura on October 11.

They were there to say that recent actions by the City Council are sending the city in the wrong direction.

City workers are not seeking raises in current contract negotiations, and they worry the city’s moves to close a library and fire station have eroded the quality of life for residents.

They rallied and briefly took over the City Council meeting chanting “We are Ventura!”

“We love our City, but we are concerned that our City Council is out of touch with its residents and out of touch with City workers who are always ready to contribute, but whose family budgets are stretched to the breaking point,” said Rosie Ornelas, a Ventura City employee and member of SEIU 721.
