CVWD Workers and Supporters Fight Back Against Cuts

cvwd_workers_sign_505px.jpgCoachella Valley Water District workers, their families, community allies and other SEIU 721 members from around Southern California packed the CVWD first-ever nighttime board meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10.

During public comment, members streamed to the microphone to tell Board members that management’s proposal to dramatically increase family healthcare costs will be a huge set-back for families who are already struggling in these hard economic times.

“I have been at CVWD for six years. I am proud to work here, but as a single father, changing my healthcare rates will be a big blow not only to my family, but to my co-workers. We deserve healthcare we can afford!”
– Dave Anderson, CVWD Mechanical Technician I

Workers and family members told the Board that management’s proposal will have devastating effects on their families. Several members, including retirees who care for ill family members, spoke of the added stress of not knowing if the cuts are coming.

– Ariannah Hodges, 14
Ariannah Hodges, 14, tearfully told the Board that her family of five depends on her father Robert’s health coverage. Robert Hodges is a meter repair worker for CVWD.

SEIU 721 members from all over Southern California came to support CVWD workers and they packed the chambers. It was standing room only. Letters of support were read and SEIU 721 Inland Region Director Julie Butcher implored the Board to send their negotiator back to the table on Friday, Sept. 13, and negotiate healthcare workers can afford.
