We Are 25 Years Beyond Prop 187 Celebration Nov. 9

25 years ago, the anti-immigrant ballot measure Prop 187 passed in the state of California after a campaign of fear and scare tactics waged by ideologues eager to demonize immigrants.

Little did these peddlers of hate know, but Prop 187 would ignite a new generation of progressive activist leaders who said, ¡Ya Basta! – Enough! It sparked a movement that fired up a generation of disenfranchised immigrants and emboldened us to fight an unjust system and make our voices heard.

We stood up, together, when our SEIU city and county workers across the state were ordered to participate in the implementation of this horrendous ploy to separate and report our neighbors based on their immigration status. This was the opposite of their jobs, to stand up for the most vulnerable populations in our communities.

We fought back and we won.

We see this work continue today as our city and county workers stood up for Sanctuary/Safe cities and achieved a great victory in making California a Sanctuary state, separating ICE enforcement activities from the important frontline work our members do.

We banded together, organized, and mobilized by the millions. With students organizing massive walkouts and unions organizing hundreds of thousands of Latino and Asian workers, union leaders of today were born out of the heat of the fight.

Prop 187 lit a fire and united us and now we will honor the resulting movement and its victories by joining together to celebrate our resistance and activism.
