LA City Issues an Update to the Vaccine Mandate Policy

We have received the news that the City of LA has issued an update to the City’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate.

The mandate update approves any pending medical or religious exemption that has been submitted to the City by January 31, 2023.

In October of 2021, SEIU 721 alongside with the Coalition of City Unions, reached an impasse with the City during negotiations over the impact of the vaccine mandate.

During those negotiations, the City agreed to allow for two types of exemptions — medical and religious  — and we provided weblinks on our SEIU 721 website.

In addition, the City’s new mandate update also approves any previously rejected medical or religious exemption that was submitted prior to January 31, 2023.

The details of what this policy update means for any City worker that has been disciplined because of the mandate is unclear.

As always, our union remains committed to defending our members’ rights at work. If you have a pending case, please stay tuned.

We are in regular communication with City Officials on the next steps and we will provide more information once it’s available.
