We are excited to announce that our union just won a massive $77 million victory! According to publicly available data, it’s the biggest public sector financial settlement in US history – and it affects LA County Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) Eligibility Worker (EW) IIs.
Why We Won $77M
For decades, EW IIs have been forced to do out-of-class work without being properly compensated. In 2013, we filed a group grievance to win EWs the money they deserve.
After over a decade of fighting in arbitration and through the courts, LA County finally agreed on the terms of a $77 million settlement for our EW IIs.
If you are an LA County DPSS EW II who qualifies under the settlement, you may receive a share of the $77 million. Individual eligibility and payment amounts will be based on eligible EW II service during the settlement period.
Our union decided to use a neutral third-party to determine the final dollar amount for each individual person. They will hold the money in an escrow account and will use a formula to determine eligibility and payment amount, and will issue the payments
Settlement payments are expected in 2027, but we will only receive payment if we officially accept this settlement amount through a majority vote.
