LA County Members: Important Details About Our Contract Settlement

Tuesday night, SEIU 721 Bargaining Policy Committee members tentatively agreed to a new 2-year union contract that provides an increase in health care contributions by the county.

The 2-year agreement also improves members’ rights in the workplace and creates a series of high-level groups to improve efficiencies and services in LA County.

Click here to download a flyer with details from the tentative agreement and a chart showing health care premiums.

Additional information including a complete summary of the tentative agreement will be available soon.

The Details on Health Care:

The 2009-11 contract includes an 8% contribution increase effective January 1, 2010 and a 7.2% increase in 2011 to the Options medical plans.

The employer contribution is projected to offset future increases in medical and dental premiums. In addition, the 2009-11 contract ensures that SEIU members enrolled in Blue Shield and Cigna plans will retain their eligibility. This applies to social workers and other former members of SEIU Local 535.

The workplace retraining article is also updated.

  1. I am currently on LTD, even though I paid for 100% LT health, unfortunately I went out in 2007 and was not eligible for 100% health coverage. With decreased income and 25% payment of my health benefits my income is not sufficient to pay all of my expenses. I know that I benefit from the union’s contract negotiations, however at this time I am just not able to afford the union dues. Is there anything else that I can do or am eligible on LTD?

  2. I would like to thank all the brothers and sisters for their support in this huge under taking, history has been made. Just take a page from our President of the UNITED STATES of AMERICA ,”yes we can ,yes we can”build a better L.A. COUNTY.

    Regards,
    Kenn

Key word being used above is “tentative”

Afterall who is to say the 2011 premium rates won’t go higher than the County’s contribution?? By then not us!
If the there were serious barganing going on we would see a option for the United States National Health Insurance program (USNHI) officialy known as H.R 676. Under this bill “All individuals residing in the United States (including any territory of the United States)
are covered under the USNHI Program entitling them to a universal,
best quality standard of care.” “The health insurance benefits under this Act cover all medically necessary services, including at least the following:

    (1) Primary care and prevention.

    (2) Inpatient care.

    (3) Outpatient care.

    (4) Emergency care.

    (5) Prescription drugs.

    (6) Durable medical equipment.

    (7) Long term care.

    (8) Mental health services.

    (9) The full scope of dental services (other than cosmetic dentistry).

Look it up at – H.R 676.org
Our struggles with healthcare are far from over and won! By organizing and supporting
H.R 676 we can make a real change for our nation.

  8. Great Job!!!! Healthcare was the utmost concern for my family. Just shows all who think that union are not necessary in the workplace are flat WRONG! I don’t know where I would be at in the county if it wasn’t for all the brothers and sisters in 721 fighting for my rights in the workplace. But everyone remember, this is only the beginning of a long battle with the BOS on future benefits. The BOS will be back like a wildfire trying to destroy us. We must not let our guard down!

  9. On behalf of ALL COUNTY EMPLOYEES represented, I’d like to express our heartfelt thanks to our Bargaining Policy Committee Members……..
Linda Dent YOU ROCK! Your dedication to us can never be repaid. Bless You Bless You!

The Health care issue was VERY IMPORTANT…..you young folks will under stand at a later time.

WHAT A MIGHTY UNION WE HAVE…THANK YOU ALL!

  10. Thanks, Linda to you and your team members for a job well done.

How would our family (County employees) survive without medical coverage? God knows that this matter must be addressed and he is working hard to assist all mankind. No one should have to suffer or die because they can not afford to pay for medical care.

If Canada is taking care of their residents, then I feel we should be able to do the same here in our state. I am praying that our government open their eyes and find an agreeable solution for all.

  11. Would love to receive more info on improved grievance procedures…strengthened Steward
Articles and payments of Arbitration Awards…….!!!

    Thanks…….GOOD JOB !!!

    GOD BLESS SEIU 721 !!!

  12. Did the BPC agree that step increases would be reduced to only 1/2 step increase instead of 1 full step increase? The County has initiated this practice before the new MOU is ratified and before the members are informed and allowed to vote as schedule for November.
