What Happened to Ventura County’s Commitment to Families?

On Oct. 25, Ventura County formally rejected SEIU 721’s proposal calling on the County to increase its financial contribution to at least cover the lowest cost health plans for every member.  Health care premiums are slated to increase again in January, so unless the County increases its contribution, Ventura County employees’ paychecks will once again be reduced. This would be the third reduction in take-home pay in the span of 12 months! For all members, another pay cut would be difficult to absorb, while some family budgets have already been stretched to the breaking point.

George_Arce_Ventura County_80x80.jpg“I’m working two jobs to make ends meet for my family and we can’t cut another $500 from our annual budget.   Workers are not asking for a raise but for the County to keep their commitment to us.”   George Arce, Education and Training Assistant/Public Health Dept.

The county backs away from its commitment to treat all workers the same.

In the 1990’s, the Ventura County Board of Supervisors recognized that the practice of providing full medical coverage for managers and not for the rank and file employee was not right and they made the decision that all workers should be treated the same.  The flex credit amount was increased and every worker received fully paid medical, dental and vision insurance.  Unless we act, the commitment for affordable healthcare for all county employees will end.

  1. Has the price of gas gone down? NO! Have rents gone down? NO! Has the cost of food, clothing, entertainment, medical care, dental care gone down? NO! Has my PAY gone down? YES! And they wonder why we have low morale. Hmmm
