SEIU 721 members have spoken: they are proudly backing former U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to be the next LA County Supervisor in the First District.

We can do that by electing Hilda Solis to the Board of Supervisors next year. Secretary Solis has always done what’s right for working families. I can’t think of a more qualified candidate to lead this County.”
-Bob Schoonover, SEIU 721 President

-Hilda Solis, Candidate for the LA County Board of Supervisors, 2014

The official endorsement came after Solis addressed more than 350 members at an outdoor town hall meeting at SEIU 721’s LA headquarters. She spoke about her plans and goals for LA County after the 2014 elections, including how she will stand up for working families and protect County services.

Over the course of the lively, three hour event, SEIU 721 members and members of other SEIU locals got to ask Solis about her views on child safety, privatization and contracting out, protecting workers’ benefits, tax reform and other key issues.

LA County Child Support Officer Lawrence Hill asked Secretary Solis if she would support raising LA County’s living wage for contract employees. Solis responded that she would: “It’s going to take all of us working together, but I’m willing to work with you all to lay the groundwork and get it done.”

When asked by LACERA Board Member Herman Santos about her commitment to defined benefit pension plans, Solis said: “I would continue to help preserve pensions for LA County employees. I know how important retirement security is for working people.”
