Honoring Veterans in Ventura County

The SEIU Local 721 Bargaining Committee and Negotiators fought in 2013 to honor our veterans in Ventura County. We are proud to have won November 11 as an official county holiday.

What does this mean for SEIU 721 County of Ventura members?

  • Veterans Day is an official holiday for the vast majority of SEIU 721 members. Student Workers are still in negotiations and will not get Veterans Day as a holiday this year.
  • County buildings will be closed on November 11 this year and in the future.
  • 24-hour facilities like VCMC and Santa Paula Hospital will be open and workers will be eligible for premium pay as they would on other holidays.

You can view the memo Ventura County CEO Mike Powers sent to the Board for approval here. The Board voted to approve the new holiday.

“Many said we couldn’t do it but we led the way to honor our veterans, and now it’s finally happening!”

  1. As a long-ignored veteran of the military and as a longtime County worker, I think it’s about time!
